support from local residents and traders, as well as Boris Johnson, Ken Livingston and Brain Paddick.

Many local people described the human chain as the largest demonstration in Tottenham for a very long time. Councillors from the ruling Council (Labour) and from the Opposition (Lib Dems) as well as David Schmitt (Dem Liberal candidate for being an MP) and Sheik Thompson (former mayor of Tottenham until few days ago) arrived to support the Community Plan.

“The turn out was brilliant” said Jacki Davenport, an NDC resident. “It was inspiring to see so many people from different backgrounds and ages coming together for such an important cause, I just hope Haringey Council and the NDC pay attention.

"The market traders have put their heart and soul into the indoor market and the local businesses have been very loyal to Tottenham." said Victoria Alvarez of Seven Sisters Market. "Keeping a thriving multicultural market and the surrounding local businesses will put Seven Sisters on the map and make it a place to visit."

The BBC (radio and TV) and many other media organizations covered the event. Tottenham Journal printed special posters and plackards rejecting the demolition of Wards Corner.

A human chain was setup to demonstrate the community’s strong objection to the development of the historic Wards Corner site at Seven Sister put forward by Grainger plc on Saturday19th July.

The site was packed with 500 people – enough to links hands to circle the entire Wards Corner site (500 yards).
The scheme, drawn up by Haringey Council and the New Deals for Communities (NDC) preferred developer Grainger, has been criticised as bland and unimaginative. It will cause the destruction of the site's heritage, its market and its local family businesses. Some are also faced with losing their homes. The development conflicts with the planning brief's

requirement that redevelopment should acknowledge the richness and diversity of the area's communities.

The Grainger plan ignores the wishes of English Heritage, the Prince’s Regeneration Trust, the Civic Trust, Planning Aid for London and many others. There has been widespread public opposition including the largest public meeting organised by Tottenham residents for decades.

Grainger’s application is to be put before the Council’s planning committee on Thursday 24th July, 6:15 pm at Civic Centre, Wood Green High Road, N22 8LE . This will be an opportunity for people to lobby Haringey council, to let them know how much they are against the Grainger development, and for the Wards Corner Community Coalition (WCC) restoration plan. The WCC plan has received strong

1. The former Wards Department Store building on the corner of Seven Sisters Road and the High Road is an early twentieth century example of a steel-framed three-storey structure with large internal spaces – the only example of such a building in Tottenham and thus a significant part of Tottenham's architectural heritage.
2. The building is in the Page Green conservation area, one of six that comprise the historic Tottenham High Road corridor, and is locally listed by Haringey Council as making a significant and positive contribution to the conservation area. The Council's own Supplementary Planning

3. There are currently 60 market stall holders and 11 local businesses located on the Wards Corner site.
